Can US lottery winners remain anonymous?

If you walk away with a big lottery win, would you like to reveal your identity?

There are pros and cons to announcing your lottery win to the world. On one hand, you’ll get fame and popularity, but on the other hand you may fall victim to scams, freeloaders, lawsuits and defamation.

We understand that winning lottery is an exciting occasion, however many people recommend keeping the news of the win to yourself to avoid trouble. There are people in the world that would do anything to get their hands on a big lottery win.

This is what happened in the terrible case of Abraham Shakespeare. This lottery winner announced his win only to get scammed by a stranger, who ended up going to jail for his murder!

Which states can US lottery winners remain anonymous?

In the USA, there aren’t that many states where you are allowed to remain anonymous after a big lottery win.

US Powerball and US Mega Millions

There are currently only 19 states in the USA that allow US Powerball and US Mega Millions lottery winners to protect their identity and remain anonymous to at least some degree after a big win.

  • Arizona
  • Delaware
  • Florida
  • Georgia
  • Illinois
  • Kansas
  • Maryland
  • Minnesota
  • Mississippi
  • Missouri
  • Montana
  • New Jersey
  • North Dakota
  • Ohio
  • South Carolina
  • Texas
  • Virginia
  • West Virginia
  • Wyoming

Winners in these US states can keep their anonymity to varying degrees. In some cases, winners’ anonymity is subject to conditions, for example, in West Virginia, winners can stay anonymous if their prize is USD$1 million or greater. In Florida, winners of USD$250,000 or more remain anonymous for 90 days, after which time their name, city of residence and amount won are available for any third party to request.

Three more reasons to keep your win a secret

Scammed

We bet American Grandmother, Marva Wilson wished she stayed anonymous after winning AUD$2.5 million.

Scammer, Freya Pearson swindled the trusting grandmother out of her winnings after lying about a non-profit organisation. Pearson was charged and sentenced to 5 years in Prison.

A lawsuit and contract killing

William ‘Bud’ Post thought all his Christmases had come at once when he won AUD$23 million in US lottery, but a year later he was back in debt. He spent his winnings on boats, houses, cars and a plane – even though he didn’t have his pilot’s license!

After his win he was sued by his girlfriend and it’s said his brother hired a hitman to kill him. If only he’d kept the news to himself.

Lover’s revenge

Ibi Roncaioli probably wishes she kept her AUD$6 million win a secret. Mrs Roncaioli allegedly squandered the cash on lavish living, alcohol, and gambling, and secretly gave AUD$2.5 million to a son from a previous marriage.

She died in 2003, and 5 years later her husband Dr. Joseph Roncaioli was convicted of poisoning her.

How would you tell your spouse you won lottery? Would you tell them at all?
